Pakistan is a Federal Republic with powers shared between the federation and the provinces. Eighteenth Constitutional Amendment was a major milestone in realization of provincial autonomy in the constitutional history of Pakistan. Like any federation, Federalism in Pakistan is characterized by an emphasis on the inter-governmental sharing of responsibilities and resources for the greater good of its diverse population. This also requires complex problem solving within provinces and between provinces and federation.

       Inter Provincial Coordination Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the focal department to look after Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's interests in all matters to be raised and decided in the Council of Common Interests (CCI). CCI is the apex constitutional body to formulate and regulate all policies in relation to the matters enshrined in Federal Legislative List Part-II such as Electricity, Minerals, Oil, Natural gas, Railways etc. Under rules of business other allocated functions include Provincial Monitoring & Complaints Cell, National Internship Programme, President's & Prime Minister's directives.

        Inter Provincial Coordination Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is striving to achieve better understanding between Governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Federal & other Provincial Governments through participatory problem solving and decision making for the better and prosperous future of Pakistan.
